I swear, this mentality is pissing me off. I wouldn’t say it’s completely ruining the hobby for me — there will always be cool toys treated as *toys* for me to collect (even if they’re My Little Ponies), and there will always be clearance figures for me to snag (until companies find a cost-effective way to melt down unsold toys to make new product). But as more and more companies and retailers realize they can exploit the super-obsessive collector who has no regard for cost, more and more “collector” lines will shoot up in price and become increasingly difficult to find at retail because the “rarity” of figures makes them that much more appealing and/or “valuable” — and because companies can justify raising the price based on that alone.
And it *is* exploitative for toy companies and sellers to rip these obsessive collectors off — shamefully so, in my opinion. Maybe they have really lucrative jobs or stock in Apple or something, but far too many of the people I’ve seen at conventions can’t even afford to brush their hair or take a shower. :(
